Research suggests paid leave benefits can alleviate work-family conflict which in turn reduces stress within the family – a benefit that may carry over to both partners in two-partner households.  Greater economic stability is likely to promote positive health and wellbeing outcomes for all members of the household including the children.  Economic stability provides victims and survivors with economic resources to leave an abusive relationship.

Providing financial support and job protection during times of acute stress and violence strengthens employer-based support for survivors of intimate partner violence, and presents an opportunity to disrupt the negative effects of trauma and childhood adversity, witnessing IPV and family dysfunction.

Abstract: Parent-Child Connectedness: Implications for Research, Interventions and Positive Impacts onAdolescent Health helps to describe the many ways that parents matter in improving their teen children’sodds for success. It provides a comprehensive review of the research literature, plus offers some practicalinsights about how and why "promising approaches work." Most importantly, it provides a contemporaryframework for talking about parents and children. This document is not just about two-parent householdsin homogenous communities. Consistent with current demographics in the United States, the families andprograms described cut across ethnic, racial, socioeconomic and gender distinctions. Moreover, thisdocument is written to help program operators, policymakers, funders and researchers reflect upon whatworks and begin to think creatively about what else needs to be done to ensure that all parents have whatthey want and what they need to form powerful, positive and productive connections with their children.

From the article abstract: "The main threats to adolescents' health are the risk behaviors they choose. How their social context shapes their behaviors is poorly understood To identify risk and protective factors at the family, school, and individual levels as they relate to 4 domains of adolescent health and morbidity: emotional health, violence, substance use, and sexuality. Eight areas were assessed: Emotional distress; suicidal thoughts and behaviors; violence; use of 3 substances (cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana); and 2 types of sexual behaviors (age of sexual debut and pregnancy history). Independent variables included measures of family context, school context, and individual characteristics."

Protective Factors for Survivors of Domestic Abuse

Download the full brief here.

Protective factors for survivors of domestic violence (DV) are an essential component of the Risk and Protective Factors Framework of the Adult & Child Survivor-Centered Approach (the Approach) developed by the Quality Improvement Center on Domestic Violence in Child Welfare.

This brief provides guidance for child welfare, domestic violence programs that serve both survivors and offenders, courts, and other collaborative partners about building protective factors that studies show lessen the impact of DV on both child and adult survivors and promote their safety, healing, and well-being.

Domestic violence (DV) protective factors are individual and relational attributes, as well as environmental and social conditions, that help to reduce the impact of DV risk factors, build individual strengths, promote healthy development, and establish conditions that support the safety, healing, and well-being of both adult and child survivors of domestic violence.

An environment of on-going violence and coercive control can make it more difficult to reinforce or build adult and child survivors’ protective factors because the person who uses domestic violence often directly or indirectly undermines their relationships, access to resources, and sense of self-worth, as well as the adult survivor’s parenting role.

This document provides a brief description of each DV protective factor and examples of how domestic violence and child welfare practitioners and their collaborative partners can help to promote each factor.

A journal publication that describes a framework for a multifaceted approach to injury prevention. The method is comprised of 6 action levels: (1) individual knowledge/skill (2) community education (3) providor education (4) foster coalitions (5) change organization practices (6) influence policy/legislation.

Chronic stress results when stress lasts for an abnormally long time, either because it is repeated or occurs continuously.  It poses a threat that is not easily diffused or avoided. This has direct implications for individuals experiencing intimate partner violence, because this type of violence is episodic, occurs with little to no warning, and poses a significant risk to an individual’s physical and mental wellbeing.

Allostatic load, or the wear-and-tear on the body that occurs in response to repeated or prolonged activation of a person’s stress systems, is associated with poor health outcomes for adults and children alike.  These vulnerabilities are compounded among economically disadvantaged workers and individuals experiencing cumulative abuse.

Victims and survivors of intimate partner violence are often overlooked as a population in need of paid sick leave. Intimate partner violence impacts the work life of victims and survivors, resulting in missed work, lost wages, and diminished performance as a result of chronic stress and allostatic load.  Understanding and mitigating the adverse health impacts of intimate partner violence requires consideration of the signs of abuse that don't present in the form of a visible black eye or bruise.  Due to the health affects of chronic stress from an abusive relationship, victims and survivors are likely to benefit from access to employer-based paid sick leave.
